The Alfred P. Sloan Foundation offers
a range of small grants to further its support of
industry studies and enable scholars to take advantage
of opportunities in the field. These grants are
only made available to Industry Studies Affiliates.
Types of Grants
Seminar series grants are specifically
designed to promote career development and may be
scheduled over the course of a semester or academic
year. Proposals from Assistant and Associate Professors
are encouraged, as are requests that enable junior
industry studies colleagues to present papers. Series
normally include 3-5 industry studies speakers.
Budgets may be up to $5,000 per seminar series-funded
through a research center, school or department-and
provide for travel and other seminar expenses.
Travel grants are available to individuals
to support travel to the university of another Industry
Studies Affiliate in order to present research findings
or to cooperate concerning research, teaching, or
Industry Center development. Individual travel support
is also available to encourage the organization
of panels at professional society meetings, where
the panel includes several industry studies scholars.
Networking grants are designed to encourage
the development of research networks by bringing
together groups of 6-12 industry studies scholars
in events organized around common interests. The
format for networking events often involves the
presentation of formal research papers; however,
other formats that would promote ongoing communication
and encourage collaboration within the network are
equally welcome. Event organizers may apply for
grants of up to $15,000, depending on the number
of scholars involved and other associated expenses.
Book promotion grants provide financial
support to promote awareness of books that exemplify
scholarly research in industry studies. Grants,
which may range up to $10,000, are meant to augment
the normal promotional efforts expected from the
book's publisher, and may be used to support a variety
of communications and outreach activities.
Workshop grants promote research
on topics that cut across industries or support
activities that otherwise advance industry studies
scholarship. Workshops are normally multi-day events
organized for 10-15 scholars. While the Program
is very flexible, essential workshop elements include
pre-workshop exchange of ideas, a program format
that emphasizes discussion as well as presentation,
and the dissemination of summary findings among
workshop participants and to the larger industry
studies community. Budgets may range up to $35,000.
Site visit grants are available to
support the travel of pre-tenure scholars to visit
research sites of interest. Site visits can encompass
diverse types of industry observation, including
broad discussions, targeted interviews, direct observation,
and data collection. Up to 10 grants will be awarded
annually in amounts of up to $5,000. Applications
are due on January 31 and recipients will be notified
in April each year.
